How to Compare Cell Phone Plans

There are several big cell phone providers out there for you to choose from if you’re looking for cell phone service, but you should compare cell phone plans to help ensure that you get the best coverage for the best price. Before opting for any one provider, take a look at these things.

You shouldn’t go broke because of a cell phone, so make sure that you compare pricing. Take a look at each of the plans offered by different providers, and make sure that you compare the type of service that you get for the price as well.

Cell Phones

Different providers offer different cell phones, so take a look at the options from each provider to choose the right one for you. You may also want to look into any promotions that the providers have to offer, such as free cell phones in exchange for signing a contract.

If you talk on your cell phone a lot, you should look into a plan that offers unlimited minutes. Otherwise, you may want to look at restricted plans to save more money.

Data Plans

Nowadays, lots of people spend a lot of time online with their cell phones, so you should definitely look at the data plans that are available when you compare cell phone plans. Some providers offer unlimited data usage, and others have lower limits. If you’re a power user, you will probably want to look for a provider that offers more data usage.

You want your cell phone to work at your home, job and other places where you go, so look for a provider that is known for having strong coverage. You can often look at coverage maps to get an idea of which provider offers the best coverage.

By keeping these things in mind, you can compare cell phone plans and choose the provider that is right for you.

Nokia Lumia 925 Review

With a good number of Windows Phone 8 devices already under its belt, Nokia has made a solid start to life on the platform. Famed for an attractive blend of customization and features, the operating system has been the catalyst behind successes including the Nokia Lumia 920 flagship. So, where could it possibly turn next for a follow up? To the Nokia Lumia 925, that’s where, a device with a brand new look and a trick or two under the hood.

But can it hit that balance of style and substance, or will it leave us wishing for something a little bit more? Why, let’s take a look and find out…

Key Features

  • 4.5-inch AMOLED Pure Motion HD+ display
  • 1.5GHz dual-core processor
  • Windows Phone 8 operating system
  • 8.7 megapixel camera
  • Nokia Smart Camera
  • 16GB internal storage

Design & Hardware

Nokia had built up an identifiable template for its Lumia range over several phones, and whilst having not completely torn it down, things are certainly different on the Lumia 925. Gone are the rounded polycarbonate edges last seen on the 920 and in their place comes an aluminum frame with sharp points and a thinner feel. Polycarbonate fills the back to add a familiar texture, but it’s a big departure from the usual fare and it looks impressive to say the least. In fact, get it in hand and you won’t want to put the Lumia 925 down, such is the scale of the improvements Nokia has made, which is a good start. Sony Xperia Z Ultra

Despite the changes there’s been no shift towards a 5-inch display á la Samsung and HTC’s recent phones, and the Finns have stuck with the 4.5-inch effort as seen on the aforementioned Nokia flagship. This doesn’t present any problems and proves large enough for most tasks, although it’s unlikely to rival the best smartphones for detail or brightness. We wouldn’t have minded a bit of an upgrade here, what with the beefed up camera props, but this is somewhat of a running theme that we’ll get to eventually. Best Android Phone

Under the hood things are also strangely familiar as the same 1.5GHz dual-core of previous Lumias returns untouched. Whilst this is more than capable of handling day-to-day tasks like browsing or gaming, at times it struggles to deal with the improved imaging, particularly when Smart Camera is involved. When rendering and editing images there are frequent and noticeable stutters, which is something you wouldn’t expect from a flagship device. It’s not terminal, and it definitely doesn’t ruin the phone as a whole, but it is an avoidable issue and a slight disappointment. Cheap Android Phone

Software & Multimedia

There may not appear to be much different when it comes to the Windows Phone 8 operating system either, but there are several key tweaks that make the platform far more functional. The inclusion of data monitoring (finally) brings it in line with Android, and things like a quick look lock screen, which displays the time and can wake the device with a double tap, add extra usability. Nokia’s own touches include Here Maps and Here Drive which allow users to download offline mapping, and the magnificent Creative Studio photo editing suite, but most of the tweaks come courtesy of Microsoft’s Amber update rather than the Finnish firm. Sony Xperia Z2

That said the platform proves as reliable as ever and, if you’re a fan of Microsoft’s OS, you’ll be right at home here. Internet Explorer offers a fast browsing experience and the Live Tiles interface is as likable as ever. Creating your own tapestry of content is a genuinely rewarding experience and, when you combine that with the all-purpose People Hub, makes for a quirky and sociable interface, if one that isn’t very different from other phones.

Nokia has gone to town on the Lumia 925’s camera in a big way though, and the results make it one of the best imaging phones of the year, if not the best. Basic performance is outstanding despite a fairly modest 8.7-megapixel count, with snaps beautifully detailed and full of natural color. Results don’t initially blow you away like they would on the Samsung Galaxy S4 , for example, but colours are more realistic and this makes for a superb all round image. PureView makes low light performance genuinely astounding as well, something that really has to be seen to be believed. With all the talk of the 41 megapixel Nokia Lumia 1020 around at the moment, if it can produce results anywhere near as good as these we will have to be picked off the floor.

For more complex photo capture Nokia has included Smart Camera, a suite of various modes that the firm is really pushing. Things like best face, action shot and object removal have all been included to put it in line with other top smartphones, but it doesn’t quite reach the same heights. Whilst some images are good, things like action shot are far too complicated and also take an age to load, the result of that overworked processor again. It’s not a catastrophe and with practice you can get some great shots out of it, but basic images are far more impressive than the clunky trickery on show here.

Performance & Verdict

Battery performance on the Nokia Lumia 925 suffers at the hands of the camera, and those looking for a phone capable of endurance will likely be disappointed. That said, use it wisely and you’ll find it performs like most other leading smartphones, with a day’s charge the average. But, go photo crazy and you can expect this to drop, something that’s logical if not a little frustrating.

Overall, how you view the phone will differ greatly depending on your situation. If you’ve never had a Windows Phone 8 device and are looking to give one a go, the Lumia 925 offers solid functionality, a very nice design, and a simply outstanding camera, making it the clear choice from the existing range. But if you’re a Lumia 920 user and want a reason to upgrade, it’s unlikely there’ll be enough here to convince you.

Nokia has created one of the best smartphone cameras we’ve seen, that much is undeniable, but it hasn’t changed enough throughout the rest of the phone to totally win us over. With the Nokia Lumia 1020 on the horizon, its position is even more curious, and it remains to be seen how it will be received by customers. But, viewing it as a standalone phone on its own merits, the Nokia Lumia 925 ticks an awful lot of boxes.

Sony Xperia Z Ultra Review

The Sony Xperia Z Ultra is the big dog of the Xperia family – the kind of phone that sits in the same class as RMS Titanic, King Kong, and the Burj Khalifa. Although this giant tablet flirts with the parameters of acceptable phone size, it certainly packs a lot in.

Key features

  • Dust proof and water resistant
  • 6.4-inch display
  • 2.2GHz quad-core processor
  • Up to 64GB internal storage
  • 8 megapixel camera
  • 3050mAh battery

Design & Hardware

In terms of physically handling the Z Ultra, it’s almost too big to hold in one hand and it feels a bit uncomfortable in your pocket. If your pockets aren’t particularly deep it will poke out the top and inevitably escape when you sit down. It’s also very thin too at just 6.5mm, so picking it up off a flat surface is quite difficult without sliding it to an edge to scoop off. Nokia Lumia 925

Given the large display, this tablet would work very well with a stylus but doesn’t come with one. We have found however that it works equally as well with a standard pencil, but unfortunately, it isn’t pressured sensitive, so not ideal if you were wanting to use it for sketching. Best Android Phone

It’s also rather durable, being both water and dust resistant. For the tropical photographer out there, you’ll be able to shoot video underwater for up to 30 minutes to a depth of one meter – ideal for snorkeling.

Software & Multimedia

Functionally, the Z Ultra is very good. Running Android Jelly Bean software the familiar user interface is welcoming, if a little overwhelming in size. Gameplay runs smoothly and the graphics are of high standard, no doubt alluding to the 2.2GHz quad-core processor. It’s easy to become absorbed in the display’s high quality, and it’s not long before you’re unaware you’re operating on a mobile device. Cheap Android Phone

The display is a vibrant pallet of other-worldly color, but the camera really brings the whole thing back to earth. If it featured something like the Xperia Z1’s 20.7-megapixel snapper this would have been a spectacular phone, but with just 8 megapixels the quality doesn’t match up to the display’s potential.

Images produced are particularly noisy and when on the camera app, the viewfinder only fills around two-thirds of the full screen.

HD video looks really sharp on the phone, and appropriately answers the question ‘why such a big display?’ With up to 64GB of internal storage, watching and downloading films will have never been such a breeze.

Performance & Verdict

The entire product leans very much towards the tablet side of things. When taking or making a call, we found positioning the speaker a bit of a task – it’s so vast and long that it feels awkward as if it was never meant to go on faces. Also, if you’re a spectacle hipster, like some of our team, the phone will knock awkwardly off the arm of your glasses, whilst wrestling to get it close enough to an ear. Sony Xperia Z2

The battery also depletes rather quickly. At 3050mAh it sounds quite sizable, but with it having to support such a big unit you’ll struggle to get a day out of it.

In summary, the Xperia Z Ultra ’s pretty damn big. It’s an awkward halfway point between tablet and phone but does have a lot to offer if you have ever wished your tablet could make calls. It’s not one to care about on a day-to-day basis, but it looks like it would be perfect for a network sharer tariff, which will become more widely available in the coming months.

What is an unlocked cell phone?

When you purchase an unlocked cell phone, what you are purchasing is a device that you can use on any GSM supported cellular network. In the United States, the two most popular GSM networks are AT&T and T-Mobile, however, there exist many companies that allow you to utilize their networks with your unlocked phone. Another great benefit to having an unlocked phone is the ability to use it anywhere you travel in the world. While different countries have different cellular networks, the GSM standard is recognized globally; all you need do is obtain a prepaid sim card from the country you are visiting and your phone will work flawlessly in that location.

What is GSM?

GSM stands for Global System for Mobile Communications. One of the key features of GSM is the SIM card (Subscriber Identity Module). The SIM is a detachable card containing the user’s subscription information and phone book. A great benefit to the Sim Card is the user can change carriers while keeping the handset simply by changing the SIM Card.

Camera Megapixel Ratings

We have all heard of megapixels and know that typically the higher the megapixel count, the better quality picture you can print. However, just what size picture does a megapixel count truly allow you to print? If you plan to share or print the photos from your phone’s camera, use this handy chart to determine if the camera’s megapixel rating will suit your individual needs.

  • Under 2MP: E-Mail only

Unless otherwise stated, all phones we review here include a microSD card slot that will allow you to easily upgrade your phone’s memory to store more music, movies, and photos. Most Android phones can utilize up to 32GB of memory with the microSD card so you can rest assured that any of the phones we recommend here will certainly meet your memory space needs. A great benefit to having to microSD card installed in your phone, aside from memory expansion, is you can use it to backup your important contacts, photos and documents should something unfortunate happen to your phone.
